The key role of causal explanation in the climate change issue

Theoria, An Internation Journal of Theory, History and Foundations of Science, 27, 2, - 2012

TheoriaThe basis for adoption of pro-environment behaviour is the understanding of causal passages within climate dynamics. The understanding of the causes of climate change is necessary in order to be able to take mitigation actions  (the subject needs to be aware of his role as a causal agent). Conversely, the understanding of the consequences of climate change is essential in motivating action (the subject must be aware of the risks caused by it in order to prevent them). The case of ozone depletion confirms this view: the understanding of its causal dynamics played a determining role in people’s behavioural response.
